I wasn't restoring files since the machine is only a few weeks old, so it was back up and running in little more than an hour, plus another hour to install Adobe CC, Office, and various business software. Since the stock drive remains intact, I can pop it back in if there is ever a need for warranty service.īTW, the entire process took about ten minutes from popping off the SP8 back cover to starting the reinstall process. That one will remain a mystery though since I have no interest in removing the cover. I am not sure whether that made the difference, or whether it is the drive, or perhaps insufficient paste applied to the stock drive. For reference, I did not reuse the Microsoft case but did add a bit of a thermo-conductive silicone pad to the new drive. Even ArcGIS Pro has only made the device a bit warm, with the heat concentrated in the apparent location of the processor rather than the drive.
Interestingly, the i7 Surface Pro 8 also now runs much cooler, with the same actions in Lightroom and Photoshop no longer triggering the fan to spin up. In addition to getting 1 tb of space, overall drive performance has improved by between 30 and 35 percent, which is noticeable in actual use rather than just silly benchmarks. In fact, higher performance is actually a bit of an understatement compared to the stock drive. It is definitely the high performance Kioxia drive. I had a bunch of expiring Dell rewards, so I decided to pick up the 1 tb version last week as an experiment (cost me nothing out of pocket). If you are looking to upgrade the storage in a SP8 (or other upgradeable Surface device), and do not want to risk getting a counterfeit Chinese drive or something without a warranty that was pulled from another machine or a WD drive that sacrifices a chunk of the available space you might want to wait until the following Dell option is back in stock (probably only a few days based upon past history): Dell M.2 PCIe NVME Gen 3x4 ClSolid State Drive - 1TB | Dell USA.
